So far … so good … no ants! I’m totally amazed that we got them all. I guess it was the ‘shock and awe’ tactics we used! LOL

Anyway … leaving Sacramento as it’s time to hit the road again. We’ve decided to head to the Coast as Bruce is itching to get his boat in the ocean and do some surfing/rolling practice.

So we (much to our regret) decided to take Hwy #1 as it looks really cool and lots of little towns along the way.

It was only 207 miles … how long could it take? How bad can it be? OMG!!!

THE LITTLE ROAD OF HORRORS!

California Hwy #1 …. Let me try and give you a picture of what it was like.

It started out as a little, narrow, twisty-turn-y road. Then it got even narrower. Then it started going up steep hills and down steep hills. Our speeds were anywhere from around 40 mph down to 10 mph. Most of the time it was around 25 mph.

California Hwy #1

Got it so far? Picture this same twisty-turn-y road showing you that a rock slide area is coming up. Now it’s a narrow, twisty-turn-y road with rocks hidden around corners. So far so good? Now picture the next sign telling us to beware of cows on the road. Cows?? Really??? Narrow, twisty-turny, up and down, rocks on road & cows on road. Then you see a sign saying that the road gets narrower and there’s crazy people on bikes that you have to dodge. Bikes … really?? Of course, then throw in the ‘tsunami warnings’ and herds of deer …

Bridge over the Russian Gulch

It took us 6 ½ hours to get from Sacramento to Mendocino … where we’re camped for 2 days. It will take me that long to un-clench my butt cheeks!!

On the other hand, Hwy #1 is breathtakingly beautiful. High cliffs looking down over magnificent rocks and ocean surf. It’s too bad I could hardly take my eyes off the road to have a look. Very few places to pull off and stretch or take a photo. I guess that’s what we’ll be doing for the next few days tho.
