We spent yesterday hiking around MacKerricher State Park. It is an amazing place (and free for a change!) with miles of trails – many of them across bluffs looking out over the crashing ocean. With it’s rocky shoreline and huge swells and surf, it really is quite magnificent!  Photo opportunities abounded around every corner!

After stopping for snacks, we headed for Ft. Bragg looking to find the ‘glass beach’ we’d heard about. Apparently for many, many years the local garbage was hauled out and dumped into the ocean outside of town (a common practice in a lot of places!) and all the years’ worth of glass (bottles, jars etc.) have been broken up and tumbled into zillions of glass bits on the shore. So much so that the beach is ½ gravel and ½ glass now.

Glass Beach

To be honest, from the write-ups (which we’ve learned can be deceiving … things always sound better than they are … but hey! That’s marketing!) I expected this glittering, sparkly Disney sort of spot … but not so much. I mean … there IS glass … and maybe at one time it was pretty cool. But the years of beachcombers picking up the best bits (tho now it’s prohibited) have left little tiny pieces that blend in with the gravel. And of course there’s very little of the cool blue and green glass … mostly white & brown. Anyway … something to see.

Back to camp and was disappointed that our planned appie night had to be inside. The wind (my relentless enemy) is just too strong and with the cool air and lots of moisture in the air it was not pleasant to sit out in. Drat. I wonder if all of California is always so windy?
