When in McCarthy – do yourself a favor and splurge at the McCarthy Lodge Dining Room!

There’s not a lot of options for food in McCarthy. It’s a VERY small place. Since we were staying at Ma Johnson’s Hotel across the street, we were told glowing reports from the front desk about this dining room. It sounded good, while pricey, but we decided to splurge and go for it.

Were we glad we did!

The restaurant is housed in a restored historic building and is very beautiful inside.

We were greeted promptly and offered the menu with their 2 offerings for the evening. They only offer 2 3-course meals … our night there was either a steak or wild Alaska sablefish for the mains. We opted for the sablefish – when in Alaska I’m happy to have anything local!

The server was able to suggest a wine pairing which we ordered.

The appetizer was a seared pork belly – sounds weird but it was delectable! I’ve never tasted anything like it … so good!

When the main course came – firstly the presentation was beautifully done – it had a green curry sauce, sautéed veggies on a bed of rice noodles.

It was quite possibly (most probably) the best meal I’ve ever had! We enjoyed every last bite and wished there was more (although we couldn’t have eaten any more as the portion was perfect!). Then dessert of a slice of lemon tart with an almond cookie and mint gelato!

This 3-course meal to DIE for was only $38 which by any standard is a very good price! I would recommend this dining room and encourage you to splurge if you’re worried about the cost … you will NOT regret it!

It looks like things may have changed in McCarthy.  The Bistro is now called the Salmon & Bear Restaurant and looks to be part of Ma Johnsons.  Here is a link to their sited
