On the Road to Whitehorse

June 24, 2014

Up early and on the road out of town.  It’s gotten SO busy with all the cruise ships in now … you can hardly walk down the sidewalks!  There’s 100’s of people and I hate crowds at the best of times!  If it were nicer out we’d maybe stay and do some hiking etc., but it’s pouring out and no end in sight.  So we’ll head to Whitehorse, provision up and then back into the wilderness.

Later ….

The drive would have been spectacular if not for the very low clouds and dozens of tour buses on the road.  As it was, we could only see about 10’ in front of us with the heavy fog.  It’s too bad as there’s some really interesting stuff along the way.

The stop in Carcross was weird … they’re trying to cater to tourists, and the natives seem to have a knack for building fantastically beautiful buildings … but they all seem to forget that they need to be functional and accessible.  So they just don’t quite make it.

Carcross

But we had a good quick lunch of soup and coffee then off to Whitehorse, stopping on the way for a quick look at the Carcross Desert, (check out our post), called the ‘Smallest Desert in the World’ although it’s not technically a desert – just a lake bottom with sand.  But it was very cool nonetheless. We also stopped at appropriately named, Emerald Lake, not far up the road from Carcross.

On into Whitehorse and after getting groceries at the SuperStore, the only supermarket in town, we headed to Walmart and are camped here tonight!  It’s not pretty … but it’s free!  And they even have a dump station and water available … and wi-fi of a sort.  Since we’re only here overnight … what the heck!  We’ll get out early and head back into B.C. and into the wilderness.  Right now Bruce is off (walking) to the liquor store and I’ve got the wings in the oven for supper.

Camping at Walmart!

What a night!  Some ya-hoo was playing loud music till the wee hours of the morning!!!  You’d think with all these RV’s around that people would be more respectful of others … but idiots are idiots … in RV’s … in campgrounds … or in Walmart parking lots.

I finally got to sleep after that and slept pretty good the rest of the night.

Up early as we want to get to a Laundromat and then head out.
