SOL DUC HOT SPRINGS

How do I describe Sol Duc Hot Springs? On one hand it’s quite nice with 4 pools available. They range from a swimming pool with a temp of 63F, a small pool at 99F, the largest pool which is 101F and a mid-size pool with the hottest temp of 106F. These temperatures apparently fluctuate as these temps were listed as ‘today’s temperatures’.

They have a good change rooms with showers and restrooms.  They also have  a gift shop and smallish restaurant. Certainly not the ‘lodge’ kind of dining facility we were hoping for.

The not great part is their camping facilities. When we asked at the lodge, we were told simply “The campground is about a mile down the road”. As we were driving there we quickly passed an ‘RV Park’ which seemed to be run by the same people who run the resort. (the resort is run by a private company for the National Parks Service).  It was basically a large parking lot with hook-ups, not great, but why didn’t they mention it? Anyway … on to the park which is part of the Olympic National Park. There are no hook-ups but all sites are only $14. The only catch is the sites are quite small   usable by tenters. Some spots fit us barely and were very heavily treed which is something we don’t prefer.

We headed back to the resort to ask about the ‘RV Park’ … yes, it’s available with electric/water hook-ups for FORTY-SEVEN dollars a night!!! And that doesn’t even include a pass to the pools! No thanks! We’ll find something we can fit into in the campground. Which we did … however dark and damp it is … it’s better than a parking lot for almost 4x the amount. If we had a larger RV (ours is 27’) we’d have been forced to park at the RV Park.

The price for the pools is $12.24 for adults for all day so that’s not TOO bad.

Because of the lack of a nice restaurant though, I think we’re only going to stay here 1 night and then head to Crescent Lake where we know they have a magnificent lodge and dining room. There’s a campground not far where we can spend the night.

Later …

We took a wonderful hike out to Sol Duc Falls.  Just a beautiful walk through some amazingly gigantic trees, moss & ferns … flowers … just amazing!  The weather held off long enough for us to hike out without getting soaked although with the amount of moisture in the air it almost felt like rain!
