FREE CAMPING IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

Throughout British Columbia, a vast network of logging roads lead to some of the most beautiful camp sites imaginable.  Because most of BC wilderness is ‘Crown Land’ (Government controlled) … when a logging company wants to log that land, the government has decreed that they ‘give back’ something to the public as part of their payment.  One of those ‘give backs’ is the creation of Forest Recreation Sites which are usually free and are first-come-first serve.

These sites are usually located adjacent to a lake or river, are generally user-maintained, have miminal facilities (usually a pit toilet, firepit, picnic table and sometimes a crude shelter for rain protection); and  there is usually free firewood (lots of logs and branches left over from logging) for the taking.

The sites can be small (1 – 2 sites) to quite large (10 – 15 sites) and they are by FAR some of the best camping sites you can find anywhere.  (Unless you like to be in campgrounds with a zillion other people and have full facilities that is!)

backroads mapbookThey can be quite difficult to find unless you know where they are … but an amazing resource is a series of books called ‘Backroad Map Books‘.  They are divided into separate books for all the different geological areas in the province and are chock full of great places to camp, fish, hike, hunt, snowmobile, ski etc.  Each listed facility has a description of what you’ll find when you get there with directions that are easy to follow.  These books are our bibles when we’re camping in B.C.
