BONUS LAKE  FOREST RECREATION SITE

After the drive to Stewart we drove for another couple of hours, then found a small forest recreation site named Bonus Lake.  It was just off the road and only had 3 sites (well, one big site with 3 picnic tables and 3 firepits!), so we called it a day and set up our screened room and Bruce got out for a little paddle on the lake (well … a pond is more like it).

Later, we pulled out a ‘good’ bottle of wine we’d been saving and had a nice Canada Day celebration with steak, corn-on-the-cob and baked potato.  No fireworks, but later than night we got a splendid lightening and thunder display so it worked out well.  Unfortunately, we’d left up the screened room so there was poor Bruce, out at 4 am with only the mosquitos, blackflies and horseflies to keep him company while he packed away the room.  What a guy!!

Up early the next a.m. and drove a short couple of hundred km’s to Smithers where we’ll do some needed repairs (windshield crack), maintenance (oil change and new air filter), cleaning, laundry and grocery shopping.  We stopped briefly in Hazelton and checked out the Hagwilget Bridge. We saw this bear along the road and had to get his picture.  So off Bruce went risking life and limb to get the picture!  (I thought I’d have the camera ready in case the bear began eating him!  But he’s ok!)Bear

Smithers is quite a nice place – small but yet with all the amenities you could want.  They’ve made a serious attempt to make the town look like an alpine village, with bricklock sidewalks and ‘swiss-looking’ storefronts.  Friendly people and a sunny day and all is good!
